Printing probably belongs to the most important inventions in the history of mankind; this technology made it much easier to disseminate knowledge. But in view of state-of-the-art technologies, printing no longer seems contemporary today. Offset and digital printing have replaced the historic letterpress. But does this procedure really have any relevance today? Even today there are still designers who use this kind of technology. Project »Modern Ways of Historic Printing« therefore explores where and how designers today still work with this printing technology and whether a combination with contemporary techniques can create design innovations.
The beautiful book shows that not only is printing still very much alive, but also that it can create stunning new visual experiences with simple tools. The most important invention of the last two thousand years is illuminated in a contemporary way in the lovingly and elaborately designed book. The specifically designed headline font will be used for a poster edition – naturally and consequently executed in printing – and clearly shows the »poetential« of the technique threatened by gloomy predictions. Everything fits, even the stencil character of the font, which is an interesting mixture of acrylic glass modules and handmade printing.
