After an intensive, communicative, busy and exhausting 18 months, we were able to say in September 2019 that we were the only team with German participation in the first Solar
Decathlon Africa. We built a habitable, fully functional house in just three weeks, from the first clay block to the door handle. Our building, as a prototype and
contribution to the Solar Decathlon Africa 2019, still stands today in Ben Guerir on the exhibition grounds. The two of us, Annika Uven and Urs Seel, were integrated into the planning from the beginning and have
accompanied the project from the first drafts to the last stone and would now like to share this experience.
In the "Interior Design + Exhibition Design" category, we saw many designs that were outstanding in every detail. What sets "Team AFRIKATERRE" apart from all the others is the courage to go for it. After
After one and a half years of intensive interdisciplinary and international planning, the project was realised within only three weeks. In the process, the students learn for life. With "Team
AFRIKATERRE" they are searching for and finding solutions to the great challenges of our time: housing shortage, scarcity of resources, rapid urbanisation. Team AFRIKATERRE" reacts to these challenges with
an energy self-sufficient earthen building with a flexible floor plan, built from and furnished with local materials.
