The present project is concerned with, for example, sustainability in relation to the densification of inner city urban spaces in Europe. In this case, it involves the addition of stories to an existing building (Café Ada, Wuppertal). Temporary accommodation above an interstitial area used as a dance floor forms a transition between old and new in the form of a rusty metal facade harmonising with the remaining brick facade. Reddish-brown, integrated photovoltaic modules blend almost imperceptibly into the architecture to provide power from the sun, a uniquely inexhaustible resource. Subjects, such as sustainable economy, sorting accuracy in recycling and urban mining play a special role.
The highly elaborate project treats the overcrowding of urban areas and inner cities in a way that is, in terms of sustainability, exemplary and commendable. The offered addition of another floor to an existing building in Wuppertal convinces, not only with the clear joining of old and the new but also with the self-assured architectural composure of the newly added construction with regard to the respected existing structure. Successful floor plans, the established construction features with the visible supporting grid and the façade covering with integrated photovoltaic-modules for power generation complement the extraordinarily positive image of the work presented.
